Description

Explore the experimental worlds of when comics and collage collide! Discover ways to combine collage, often free-form and intuitive, with comic making, often plotted and organized, in new, surprising ways that inform one another. First, we dive into the rich history of both mainstream and indie cartoonists who have implemented collage in their storytelling, as well as touch on the fine artists who have found the zine as a vehicle for expression. Then we will tackle a few in-class exercises, culminating in studio time to create a collaged, sequenced booklet. Students will leave with a single-page mini-comic and greater knowledge on how to express themselves in both collage and comics mediums. No collage or comics experience necessary. About the Instructor: Lara Antal (she/they) is an award-winning cartoonist who uses black comedy and colorful, critical lenses to tell really human stories. Their debut graphic novel, Ronan and the Endless Sea of Stars, was the recipient of the 2023 Graphic Medicine Award and a finalist for the Ringo Comic Awards. They've collaborated on storytelling projects for places like The Washington Post and CNN, and worked with graphic novel publishers like Little Brown Books, Penguin Random House, and Abrams Books. Their work has been featured in WNYC-NPR, Kirkus, Paris Review, and The Washington Post's Best Illustrations of 2022. Instagram: @laraantal Website: www.lara-antal.com
