Description

This workshop will provide tools to printmakers –or any artists with some print experience– for preparing digital files for print previews and color separations; maximizing print studio time and saving on the guesswork. These skills can also be combined with other, less limiting digital art techniques to create intentional, complex digital assets and artworks. Primarily working in Adobe Photoshop, artists will learn workflows and file making best-practices to prepare prints or images from photos. Illustrations, found images, patterns, or whatever their practices encompass. Simple digital tools like Adobe Scan or phone cameras will be used to draw from existing works or composite found objects, textures, and materials. Taking into consideration common paper sizes for maximum output, paper color’s effect on ink color tones, lost area from registration techniques, and more, this workshop is best suited for the working artist where time in the studio can be challenging, but time on the computer is readily available. An excellent course for those artists looking to improve their prepress workflows, printmakers without convenient and consistent access to studio equipment, or anyone looking to create complex digital artwork with printmaking’s processes and layering methodology. About the instructor: teke cocina (he/him) is a New York City-based interdisciplinary artist specializing in printmaking and book arts. Working primarily through iterative series, cocina’s work navigates a wide range of imagery—from the queering of historical biblical “heroes” and hagiography—to contemporary pop-cultural phenomena like television, video games, comics and cartoons, generating a constellation of objects that investigate the fluid boundaries between perception, illusion, and identity, or between affection, closeness, and violence. cocina earned his BFA from the University at Buffalo and his MFA from Purchase College, SUNY. Since 2023, he has been recognized on the White Columns Curated Artist Registry. He currently serves as a Printshop Technician at Parsons, The New School for Design, where he also provides faculty instruction. He recently served as a guest instructor at the Lower East Side Printshop, further embedding in the New York print community.
