Description

**This class is fully booked. Please email info@powerhousearts.org to join the waitlist** In this hands-on four session class, students will explore the emerging field of biodesign, focusing on how creativity and innovation can address the urgent challenges of the waste economy, planetary health, and the social impact of design. By engaging with environmentally thoughtful, bio-based materials like bioplastics using living organisms like mycelium and algae, students will learn how to reimagine waste as a resource and design with nature to create healthier, environmentally-kind products. Students will discover how bioart and biodesign offer alternatives— learning from and building with nature's creatures to create closed-loop systems, reuse waste, and move towards healthier living environments. Students will fabricate simple biomaterials recipes using gelatin, algae, mycelium, and organic waste. Materials are provided. About the Instructor: Amy Chien (she/her) is a Taiwanese American architectural designer and materials researcher whose creative practice is rooted in deep empathy—for both human and non-human life. Deeply attuned to nature, she co-creates with plants, fungi, bacteria, and other living organisms, drawing from their wisdom and locality for a return to a symbiotic reality. She received the grand prize in Pratt’s Material Lab Competition and held a residency with Swale x Urban Soils Institute. Currently an artist-in-residence in Japan, she is integrating ancient craft into her creative practice while leading the Genspace Biomaterials Studio, where she guides learners of all ages in the intersection of material science, art, and design. @amy_art_architecture
