Memory Mini Comics (4 Week Class)

Description

In this four week course we will distill a memory into a published mini-comic. Through hands-on exercises, peer critique, one-on-one instructor feedback and studio time, this course will provide the space and support needed to develop a narrative from start to finish. First, students will dive into the unique language of comics, combining imagery, text, and sequence, to express their lived experience. Next, we will learn evocative and sensory storytelling techniques, exploring memories as sights, sounds, feelings, and moods. Students will then discover how to craft visually dynamic panels, edit their work, and polish their project into a publication that can be shared. The results will range from poetic to memoir, and students will leave with a finished mini-comic and new storytelling skills they can apply to any future project. This course is intended for those looking to dig deep into their storytelling chops and discover their voice in the comic medium. No comics or drawing experience necessary. Materials are provided. Their debut graphic novel, Ronan and the Endless Sea of Stars, was the recipient of the 2023 Graphic Medicine Award and a finalist for the Ringo Comic Awards. They've collaborated on storytelling projects for places like The Washington Post and CNN, and worked with graphic novel publishers like Little Brown Books, Penguin Random House, and Abrams Books.
