with Cici Osias | 4 sessions
12 spots left
Description
In this four week class, students will learn several techniques within the Youba resist-dyeing art of adirẹ. This method – traditionally performed with indigo dye – uses a cassava paste or melted wax to paint and stamp designs onto fabric to resist dye. Students will explore several methods for applying resist to fabric (including painting, stamping, tying and stitching), as well as how to fix an indigo vat. We will also learn about the history of indigo in Nigeria and its legacy in the American South during enslavement. No prior dyeing experience is necessary. About the Instructor: Cici Osias (she/her) is a Baltimore-born textile artist based in Brooklyn, NY.
