“Technology is not neutral. We’re inside of what we make, and it’s inside of us. We’re living in a world of connections — and it matters which ones get made and unmade.” — Donna J. Haraway As Adobe continues to alienate users with high costs, slower speeds and frequent crashes from non-consensual AI promotion, new open source subscription-free software is emerging. This class will be part hands-on workshop learning digital tools, and part discussion and critique of these evolving and disruptive technologies. We will take a software-agnostic* point of view, focusing on the fundamentals of digital art, regardless of the computer program. Attention will be given to both the Adobe Create Suite Programs (Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign) as well as comparable free, open source apps such as Photopea, GIMP and Inkspace. We will use these digital tools to create expressive collage, patterns, and graphic language. Students can explore independent projects as well as technical exercises. This class is great for people who would like to get comfortable with experimentation and non-perfectionism. An interest in unpacking contemporary cultural issues around technology is also a plus. Price Tiers: 20% off Labor: $112 Labor: $140 Labor + Materials: $170 About the Instructor: Kimberly Reinhardt (she/her/they) is an interdisciplinary artist and designer whose work explores graphic form and visual systems, silkscreen and risograph printing, composting, and building community through collaboration. Kimberly lives in New York City and Western Massachusetts. She received her BFA from Cooper Union and has taught widely across art and design programs. Her work has been shown at Feature Inc. in NYC, Pulp Gallery in Holyoke and is currently included in an ongoing, traveling classroom exhibition organized by Darling Green. Reinhardt has been working with the Adobe Creative suite for over 30 years. She is most excited to be developing a curriculum that she hopes will disrupt the monopoly of industry standard surveillance subscription software while also highlighting environmental and nervous system care practices that are traditionally neglected in such courses. Cancellation Policy: In the event that you need to cancel your registration of the class or workshop, we ask that you please inform us as soon as possible, allowing us to give your spot to another person. We agree to provide you with a full refund if your cancellation is no less than 7 calendar days prior to the first date of the program; if your cancellation is closer in time than 7 calendar days to the first date of the program, then, any deposits or payments you have made are non-returnable. In the event that PHA needs to cancel a class or workshop due to PHA’s own reasons (for e.g., teacher emergency) your payment for the program will be refunded in full. If you are unable to attend a class or workshop for your own reasons, you will not be refunded for that portion of the program. Full payment for the class or workshop is required before your registration is considered complete. Health and Wellness Policy: If you are sick, we ask that you please refrain from attending in consideration of the health and safety of your fellow classmates. Please note that all of our classes and workshops are designed to be hands-on, and make-up classes are not available. Masks will be available at the front desk and in the classroom for your use.
