Description

In this hands-on 4 session class, students will explore conceptual and physical forms of unfolding, spinning, and expanding through zine and book-making. With a focus on non-linear methodologies of thinking and making, students will create five blank books, including spiral zines, accordions, dos-a-dos, volvelles, and flag books. Through this exploration of the physical form, students will then approach a conceptual artist book through auto-ethnographic journaling, photography, or drawing. Throughout the sessions, each student will develop an artist book that contends with themes of unfolding, memory, and non-linear discovery. About the Instructor: Juliana Maurer (they/she) is a Brooklyn-based book artist, graphic designer, and community organizer. They are a co-founder of Mossy Press, an international collaborative studio dedicated to small press publishing and social practice. Since 2024, Mossy Press has published over 20 zines and artist books, and can be found in special collections and radical bookstores across the East Coast, UK, and Ireland. Juliana has also collaborated and held positions at MoMA, Freedom Press, and the Smith Gallery. Juliana’s practice focuses on social engagement, collaborative and participatory art, artists’ books, and experimental printed matter, drawing influence from DIY and protest movements. Through collaborative making, free and low-barrier zine workshops, and lineages of direct action and community care, they seek to build community networks and use printed matter to support moments and movements for collective liberation. As we struggle towards an uncertain future, they hope that their work can serve to build relationships across time, boundaries, and borders. Instagram: @juliana.q.m Website: julianamaurer.com
